With John Paul Stevens announced retirement at the end of this Court term, who should President Obama appoint to take his place? Republicans have warned him that they might filibuster his nominee if he chooses someone too liberal. Below are links that provide information on some of his potential choices. Read over them and indicate which you think would be his best choice.
Diane Wood
Merrick Garland
Elana Kagan
Pamela Karlan
Kathleen Sullivan

I think Elana Kagan would be the best candidate to place on the bench. She has a wide variety of credientials; and her experiences with the University of Chicago Law School, as well as Harvard Law School have proved her abilities as an unbiased leader. She seems very well rounded, and I think she has shown great potential.

From what I have gathered from the ever resourceful wikipedia, Merrick Garland seems like a smart dude with a summa cum laude at Harvard College and magna cum laude from Harvard Law School. He has also had experience in the court as well.
ReplyDeleteGiven President Obama's recent victory with health care, he should avoid controversy with this newest appointment. That doesn't mean he should pander to the opposite party's views, but I think he should look for moderation in his candidate. However, the Court has slowly shifted to the right over the years.. Obama's decision could dramatically affect the decisions of the federal judicial branch for years to come.

ReplyDeletePerhaps with this decision Obama should avoid controversy. I think moderate is the best way to go for him.
In my personal opinion Kathleen Sullivan is out because honestly it scares me that she has defended Shell Oil in her past. It's ok to defend what I consider the "bad guys", but that does not mean that I have to be ok with who she defended. Also, Pamela Karlan is off the hiring list because I think she is too liberal and that might cause Republicans to give birth to an elephant.
Honestly, I would prefer a woman on the Supreme Court...that is pretty sexist though so I am stuck between the remaining three. Each of them seem to have outstanding credentials. I personally like Elana Kagan. I am really not entirely sure why, but I have heard her talk on television before and she seems very respectable. I did not read anything as to whether or not she was democrat or republican so that could be another deciding factor for me.
The goods news is that in the end I am not the one that has to make that decision. It must not be easy to appoint such important people! Sending a little shout out to the president!! Because he does all the things that I do not want to ever have to do!
